Deciding Whether to Leave Google/Apple/Facebook? Here’s the One Question to Ask Yourself

There’s one question to ask yourself periodically, especially when considering a new assignment over an external opportunity, and that question is: Imagine you were at a different job you loved and a recruiter from [Google/ Apple/ Facebook] called you to offer you your current job at [Google/ Apple/ Facebook], would you chase it? Or in other words, would you re-apply today for the job you currently have? If you answer “no, I wouldn’t fight hard for the job I have” then you owe it to yourself to find something that you can be excited about.

Hunter Walk 

Hunter Walk is a Partner at Homebrew, a seed stage venture fund. Previously, he led consumer product management at YouTube, delivering billions of playbacks a day across computers, phones, tablets and TVs. Hunter joined Google in 2003 managing product and sales efforts for Google’s contextual advertising business. He was a founding member of the product and marketing team at Linden Lab, the creators of the online virtual world Second Life.

Earlier in his career, he was a management consultant and also spent a year at Late Night with Conan O’ Brien. Hunter received a BA in History from Vassar and an MBA from Stanford University.
